Problems with buffering on streams |
For the last week every time I try to listen to a stream (mostly been checking out recent Gutterball/Steve Wynn/Dream Syndicate shows) I have been having problems with extremely slow buffering. The buffering either stays just ahead of the streaming music or is slow that the music overtakes it and causes those annoying pauses. I haven't seen anything like this in 2 years of streaming shows on the archive. Doesn't matter (seemingly) what time of day or night I try to connect...same result, slow as molasses, almost entirely crippled. Has anyone else experienced this? All other sites I go to to stream (such as Wolfgang's Vault)and those I download from seem fine and up to snuff/speed. Is the LMA experiencing server problems or anything like that? I tried e mailing the admin moderators at technical support but so far after three days no reply. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
The problem is most likely because you're checking out very recent shows. Reason being, recent shows are uploaded to servers that are still being actively uploaded to, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that new shows are the most popular ones - which can, at times, make things a bit draggy for downloaders.
There may be other explanations as well but that's been my experience...

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
Dont think thats it....since the shows I've been trying to listen to the last few days were posted several weeks ago and I doubt that the Steve Wynn/Dream Syndicate/Gutterball archive is one of the more active ones, like the Grateful Dead Collection. Be nice if an admin would drop in....hint, hint, hint!

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
Everything has been streaming with hesitations for me lately, the flash video players especially. The audio sometimes goes silent for a second and then plays straight through, but movies stutter more than they used to.

If you are streaming at home via wi-fi, try re-starting your router.
I sometimes have streaming problems which tend to be resolved by this.

I am on a VIC-20 with a 300 baud phone modem. I have the detachable 5.25 inch floppy drive and the extra 35 KB memory expansion.

It's not that the
show is more active, it's that the server it's on is more active. So a really, really popular show may be on the same server as the shows you're trying to listen to. If it's a bunch of shows, that's probably not the answer...maybe your ISP is messing with your connection?

If you provide us a link to the show, we can see if we are having the same troubles. If not, it'll rule out your connection as the problem.

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
Greenone- You may be right. I did a brief experiment....went and streamed Little Feat 7-19-73 (BTW, great show) which is on page 1 of the Little Feat collection and thus probably an "ol" listing on an "old" server. No problems whatsoever with buffering....went at usual speed, streamed at 189 kps for 4 songs just like normal. Then I tried the most recent Phil Lesh and Friends stream (posted several hours ago...the Darien, Ct. show)and the buffering was as glacial (if not non-existent!) as the Dream Syndicate/Gutterball/Wynn streams. I also tried an older Dream Syndicate show (Velakio Theater, Piraeus, Greece from 1987) and it was slow as molasses and crapped out after a minute or so! So, there may be something to what you said about "older" listings being on an older and less-used server except the old Dream Syndicate show (posted well over a year ago!)was as wigged out as the recent postings.
Chops11- See above. Too many shows to list but I'll list a few that I have tried this week and they were all non-streamable because of the buffering slowness problem: Dream Syndicate: 9-07-83, 10-21-88, 12-2-82, 2-12-83, 3-14-83, 4-15-83, 5-12-83, 6-3-83, 5-22-85, 3-6-87, 4-30-87, Gutterball: 7-5-94, 8-20-94 and 7-30-94. Steve Wynn: 3-23-85, 4-14-97, 4-27-85, 9-6-85, 4-19-97, 1-31-98, 4-17-88,and 3-18-87. Basically, Chops, every Dream Syndicate, Gutterball and Steve Wynn show posted in the last several months. But note that I also had problems with the 87 Dream Syndicate show from Piraeus which is an old posting. Maybe the problem is confined to this Gutterball/Dream Syndicate/Steve Wynn collection? Hope this gives you (more than) enough material to work on and look into. Keep me posted. Definitely not a problem on my end since a) the older Little Feat shows streamed fine as I mentioned above and b) no problems streaming from Wolfgangs Vault or Sugar Megs and c) no problems downloading Links 2003 home created golf courses (some files as large as 150 MB!)or downloading small files from Sugar Megs or from Mojo Nixon's site and the Meat Puppets Live Repository.

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
Artists shows are placed randomly on servers, so it's not a problem with an artist in general. I just took the first 5 shows you posted and streamed them all without troubles for me, so it's hard to say. It could've been network problems, the archive being very busy when you tried it, or a problem with a given server. Maybe next time you have a problem post a link to that show right away, this way we can see if we are having the same troubles/see the servers stats.

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
Thanks Chops for looking into it. Does seem odd...just streamed about an hours worth of Little Feat (older 78 shows) from 3 seperate shows with no problems whatsoever. Next time (probably tommorrow) that I try to stream some Dream Syndicate/Gutterball/Steve Wynn (or whatever else) and that slow-as-molasses buffering occurs I will post promptly so that it will be easier for you to locate the problem. Thanks for checking. Is this at all related to the power failures I have read about in different forums here in San Francisco a few weeks ago?

No, more related to the huge popularity of the site.

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
No joking! The LMA (and the other parts of the Archive) are an invaluable asset...I've come here almost every day, more or less, since I discovered the place years ago! Keep up the great work!
PS A quick question...I noticed a while ago that there is a collection for True West (I assume the old 80s neo-pysch band and compatriots od Dream Syndicate) but the folder is empty...is this because it was withdrawn or no one has uploaded any content? If it is the latter, then I have a couple of mid 80s shows on cassette that if I can find them and have a friend edit them into the correct format I will try to upload at some point. Let me know if this is the right True West since I believe there is a newer band using that name now unrelated to the Russ Tolman & Gavin Blair led TW of the 80s. Let me know.

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
chops- Just to update you....must be a traffic issue. Last night I streamed 3 or 4 songs from the three Gutterball shows (7/5/94, 8/20/94 and Steve Wynn 1-31-98)between 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM and no problems whatsoever, buffered fairly quickly in all cases and there were no pauses. So obviously it has nothing to do with the collection or the files within. This morning at 10:30 Am tried streaming Dream Syndicate 10-21-88 and it was slow as molasses....had to pause in between songs to let the very slow buffer work. Minutes later tried a 4 song stream from Little Feat (7-8-78) and it streamed and buffered fast and again w/o pauses...no problems. So, its pretty obvious it is a traffic issue. Has the listenership (is that a word?) bumped up dramatically in the last month or so. With my luck the Steve Wynn/Gutterball/Dream Syndicate collections are probably on the same server as the Grateful Dead (love em!), Phil lesh and Friends (love em!), Ratdog (hate em!) and the Smashing Pumpkins (hate em!)...lol! Thanks for checking into the problem again....appreciate it.

Re: True West, yes, this is the band you're thinking of. The note on their collection page came from Russ Tolman himself, but it looks like they never got around to uploading anything. Send away!

Re: Problems with buffering on streams |
Cool...must find the two tapes first and then edit into proper format, hopefully my friend (a pro music engineer) can do it. What is proper format? Is their instruction page link here? I'll look for tapes this weekend...I remember one was from Danceteria in New York in either 83 or 84. Decent audience recording from what I can remember.
